Who is Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s father Gjert?
Under the guidance of their father, Gjert, Norwegian middle and long-distance runners Jakob, Filip, and Henrik have all achieved success.
Here’s what we know, though, as his Olympian kids have accused him of physical and mental abuse since he resigned as their coach.
Who is Gjert Ingebrigtsen?
Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen and his brothers, who are all professional athletes, are the children of Gjert Ingebrigtsen, who was their father and coach.
Although he is well-known for helping his sons achieve success on the international stage in middle-distance running, he has recently been the focus of grave accusations and legal actions.
Up until 2022, Gjert trained his kids Henrik, Filip, and Jakob.
Remarkable success
Jakob accomplished incredible feats under his father’s tutelage, including becoming a two-time world champion in the 5,000m and winning gold in the event in Paris in 2024.

Henrik and Filip, his other sons, also won European 1500-meter titles in 2012 and 2016, respectively, demonstrating their exceptional performance.
For’medical reasons’, Gjert quit coaching his sons in 2022 after Jakob won the gold medal in the 1500m at the Tokyo Olympics.
Abuse allegations
The Norwegian tabloid VG reported about Jakob and his brothers’ public accusations of their father’s violent behavior in November 2023.
The brothers described their father as “very aggressive and controlling” and voiced continuous “discomfort and fear” about him.
Gjert Ingebrigtsen was sued as a result of these accusations.
Legal charges
Norwegian authorities accused Gjert Ingebrigtsen of physical abuse in April 2024.
The Norwegian public prosecutor’s office indicted Gjert on November 29, 2024, for the physical and psychological abuse of Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
The prosecution is asking for at least 30 days for the trial to begin, and it is anticipated to happen in the first half of 2025.
Gjert Ingebrigtsen’s denials
Gjert Ingebrigtsen has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing when the accusations were originally made.
He has insisted through his attorneys that he does not take criminal responsibility for the charges.
According to a statement released by Gjert’s attorneys, John Christian Elden and Heidi Reisvang, “Gjert Ingebrigtsen maintains what he has said all along, that he does not admit criminal guilt for the offences he has been charged with and that he has never subjected any of his children to either physical or mental abuse.”
Developments
Since the first charges were brought, there have been various developments in the case.
Gjert is currently facing one charge, but five other accusations were dropped for lack of proof.
