Patrice Banks’ life before Girl s Auto Clinic

The auto tech celebrity was raised in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, in a working-class household.

She was the first person in her family to complete both high school and college, and she is the daughter of a single mother.

Banks has always been driven to work, as seen by her three high school jobs, which allowed her to purchase her first car when she was sixteen.

With her grandfather teaching her to drive, she saw this as a way out of an abusive home.

At Phoenixville High School, the engineer-turned-auto tech excelled in math and science and was an honors student.

Her mother encouraged her to pursue a career in engineering, and she also took inspiration from an African-American industrial engineer she worked with as a salesperson for enterprises.

How did Patricia Banks start Girl’s Auto Clinic?

In a 2015 interview with the Washington Post, Banks stated that she had become “tired of feeling like an auto airhead and getting scammed by the male-dominated car-care industry” by the time she decided to become an auto technician.

“High heels and an air-conditioned office for boots, Dickies, and grime-covered hands” is what she said she exchanged her six-figure salary for.

Bank cited statistics showing women being charged for needless repairs and her personal experience of having a dealer overprescribe a gearbox job for her two-year-old SUV.

As a result, banks began searching for female mechanics, but discovered that women only made up 2% of the workforce.

She continued: “I saw a majorbusinessopportunity in the auto industry s gender gap.”

At Delaware Technical Community College, where she was the sole female student enrolled in night sessions, Banks was more than ten years older than her peers.

Working free shifts at a small repair shop and then a larger one taught her how to manage an auto business.

In January 2017, a few years later, Banks established Girls Auto Clinic in Pennsylvania.

She hired five female mechanics after a year, all of whom had approached her personally to pursue careers in the field.
