Wichita Man Sentenced to 44 Years in Prison for 2023 Double Shooting Incident
A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 44 years in prison after killing his girlfriend’s mother and injuring another woman in a shooting in southeast Wichita last year. “District Judge Sean Hatfield this afternoon followed the plea agreement and sentenced Matthew Alexander III, 30, of Wichita, to 528 months in prison with 36 months post-release,” Dan Dillon, a spokesperson for the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, stated Friday via email.
The judge also ordered $3,748 in restitution to be paid to the Kansas Crime Victims Compensation Fund, and the jail term “run consecutive to the remainder of a federal sentence Alexander received for his conviction of possession of a weapon by a prohibited person,” according to Dillon.
Alexander pled guilty on May 10 to modified counts of second-degree reckless murder and attempted second-degree murder in the killings of Addriane Kenney, 48, and her 22-year-old daughter, as well as one count of aggravated burglary, according to court documents. Kenney, who had been shot in the head, died on the spot from her injuries. The daughter survived and phoned 911, according to court records. Police and prosecutors also spelled Kenney’s first name as “Adrain.”
Wichita police responded to a gunshot at 831 S. Mission, near Lincoln and Woodlawn, around 11:25 p.m. on September 21, 2023. Police had previously stated that the incident was “domestic-related” and that Alexander and the victims lived together.
According to court records, Kenney was his girlfriend’s mother. According to court filings, Alexander arrived at the address the night of the shooting wearing a light-colored ski mask, telling everyone, “It’s demon time” and “you better leave before I pop you,” before pulling a revolver from his hoodie and opening fire. He shot the 22-year-old woman first. When she fled, he fired two more times, according to court filings. Then he “ran up behind… (Kenney) and fired one time” at the back of her head, according to court documents.
According to court records, Alexander became “irate,” threw items around, stole a car, and fired a gun in the days leading up to the shooting after talking with his girlfriend about bringing his new kid home.
According to an affidavit released by the court, he had a verbal fight with his girlfriend over her contact with other people and was unhappy about a drink that hadn’t been put in the refrigerator prior to the shooting. After a brief confrontation, officers apprehended Alexander in the 600 block of South Mission, where he surrendered quietly, police say.
