Four Wounded in Brooklyn Subway Shooting Involving Knife-Wielding Suspect
A chaotic scene unfolded at a Brooklyn subway station when police officers shot a man threatening them with a knife, inadvertently wounding four people, including two bystanders and one of the officers. The incident occurred at the Sutter Avenue station in Brownsville on Sunday, after police confronted the man for evading his subway fare.
The officers followed the 37-year-old man to an elevated platform after he refused to comply with orders to stop, muttering threats of violence. As the situation escalated, police noticed the man was armed with a knife and followed him onto a train. Despite firing two Tasers, the man remained aggressive, advancing on the officers. They responded by firing multiple rounds, hitting the man several times. In the aftermath, both officers realized that other passengers had also been struck by gunfire.
One passenger, a 49-year-old man, was critically injured when a stray bullet passed into an adjoining subway car, hitting him in the head. Another bystander, a 26-year-old woman, suffered a graze wound. One officer was also struck by a bullet that entered his torso and lodged in his back but is expected to recover.
Interim Police Commissioner Thomas Donlan, appointed just days prior, emphasized that the violent incident was a result of the suspect’s actions. Mayor Eric Adams, who visited the injured officer in the hospital, labeled the suspect a “career criminal” with over 20 prior arrests and a history of mental illness. While video footage of the encounter has yet to be released, police did share a cropped image of the man holding a knife with a blade about the width of his palm.
