Motorcyclist Killed in Train Collision in Upstate New York
A tragic accident occurred in Beekmantown, New York, on Saturday, September 14, when a motorcyclist was struck by a train after failing to notice a railroad crossing arm in the down position. The victim, identified as 66-year-old Michael M. LaPierre from West Chazy, New York, was ejected from his Harley Davidson motorcycle onto the tracks after hitting the crossing arm. Sadly, he was struck by the train and pronounced dead at the scene.
New York State Police are continuing to investigate the incident. According to their initial findings, LaPierre had been traveling southwest on Ashley Road when the accident occurred. The investigation remains ongoing as officials seek to understand the circumstances leading to the crash.
Motorcycle accidents in New York state are not uncommon. Data from the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research, part of the University at Albany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, shows that an average of 162 motorcyclists die each year on New York roads.
