New Jersey Earthquake Sends Aftershock Tremors Through East Coast Communities

DEBARYLIFE – Friday night, a 4.0 aftershock from an earlier earthquake hit New Jersey, causing more shaking in the Northeast.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake happened at 5:59 p.m. ET. Around Gladstone, New Jersey, there was a 4.0 aftershock report.

New York and other nearby places felt the shake. After the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that hit nearby Lebanon, New Jersey at 10:23 am, about 42 million people had already felt its effects.

Following the aftershock, New York officials sent out a message telling people to stay inside and call for help if they were hurt. The shaking was also felt in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.

Authorities said no “major damage reports” and no injuries were recorded.

Following the quake, Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey sent out a tweet asking people to proceed with caution when calling 911.

A 4.0 magnitude aftershock from this morning’s earthquake in New Jersey just happened, according to Kathy Hochul, governor of New York. Significant damage has not yet been reported, and we are still looking into the most important assets.

Based on the Federal Emergency Management Agency, aftershocks are common after an earthquake and will likely continue for a while.

If you feel an aftershock, the agency tells you to stay away from damaged buildings and drop and hide.
