Deadly Shooting in Orange Mound, Court Docs Reveal Charges Against 3 Suspects After Drug Search

Memphis, Tennessee –  What transpired before a Shelby County Sheriff Deputy shot and killed a man is revealed in new information.

The building on Barron Avenue where deputies shot James Hampton was allegedly being searched by police due to allegations that it housed drug trafficking operations, according to court filings.

According to court documents, three males are currently being charged with several felonies related to drugs following the deputy’s shooting.

Speaking about the shooting incident, Sheriff Floyd Bonner acknowledged that the warrant that was issued was for a high-risk drug search.

Following the fatal deputy-involved gunshot, nine firearms, more than six pounds of marijuana, oxycodone, promethazine, Xanax, and hundreds of dollars in cash were discovered, according to court documents.

According to court documents, investigators subsequently verified that 3119 Barron Avenue serves as a “base of operations for numerous subjects involved in a drug trafficking organization.”

People who live close by who asked not to be named but expressed their tiredness of the violence were spoken to by Action News Five.

“All I could hear was gunfire, shooting, firing. A resident commented, “I thought, uh oh, another death.”

SWAT officers were executing a high-risk narcotics search warrant at the building on Barron Avenue on Friday, according to Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner.

He said that as the cops approached the scene, James Hampton drove a car in their direction. The deputies then opened fire, killing Hampton.

The copious amounts of drugs and firearms discovered during the inquiry led to the arrest and charging of Quentavious Johnson, Christian Mull, and Willie Hampton, according to court documents.

Mull, Johnson, and Hampton are each being held on a $15,000, $25,000, and $40,000 bond, respectively.

A resident remarked, “The street I live on is quiet; you can’t hear anything, but the street across the street might be in the middle of World War 3.”

Court documents state that detectives observed several drug deals taking place when individuals either went to a driver’s window or hurriedly entered and exited vehicles on the passenger side.

“Hey, this is a great way to create money and attract our youth. They don’t say that you could also lose your life. And that’s just what they’re doing—losing their lives,” a neighbor added.

The three guys who are being charged are expected to appear in court on Monday.
