The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced in a statement that they had carried out a “precise strike on a Hamas compound embedded inside an Unrwa school in the area of Nuseirat” using planes.

Since then, at least 36,580 people have died in Gaza, according to the health ministry operated by Hamas in the region.

According to the IDF, precautions were taken to “reduce the risk of harming uninvolved civilians” before the airstrike.

Following reports of numerous Palestinian deaths, the Israeli military earlier declared that it had assumed “operational control” over the eastern portions of the Bureij refugee camp and the town of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.

Residents reported heavy shelling, and since Tuesday, at least 70 bodies—mostly those of women and children—had been taken to a nearby hospital, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), a humanitarian organization.

One of the few operational medical institutions left in central Gaza, the al-Aqsa hospital in Deir al-Balah, was described by MSF’s medical staff on the ground as being in “apocalyptic” condition.
