BRUTAL END! Alabama Inmate Dies Two Weeks Before Release After Severe Abuse
An Alabama man died after being beaten, tormented, and sexually raped in jail for days, just two weeks before his scheduled release, according to his family.
Daniel Williams, a 22-year-old father of two infants, was nearing the conclusion of his one-year term for second-degree larceny when he was discovered unresponsive at Staton Correctional Facility on Oct. 22, two weeks before dying in a hospital, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.
His family claims they were not informed until October 25 that he was brain-dead in the hospital and that Warden Joseph Headley blamed it on narcotics.
“I spoke with the warden myself, and he said it’s obviously a drug overdose,” Williams’ stepmother, Taylor Bostic, told the Alabama Political Reporter. She and Williams’ father, Terry, “just assumed he got ahold of some bad drugs or something,” she explained.
“When we went to visit him, he was battered and injured, and you could see where his hands were chained. “I mean, you can tell it’s not a drug overdose,” she explained.
Daniel Williams died after being beaten, tortured, and sexually molested in prison for several days. “And that’s when [dad Terry Williams] called the warden and asked him why the hell he told us that his son is dying from a drug overdose when it’s assault,” claimed his stepmother.
“And all he could say after that was it’s under investigation.”
They later discovered he had been kidnapped and raped or “tied up, beaten, and rented out for two to three days” by another prisoner, according to the site, citing prison insiders who claimed such abuse was frequent there.
According to an online fundraiser, he was beaten, tortured, and sexually raped by a gang and has only 14 days before his release. The father of two was taken off life support on November 5 and died four days later.
According to the story, Terry Williams and Bostic have hired a lawyer to hold someone accountable and prevent similar acts in the future.
“We’ve got to stop this,” the bereaved father reportedly stated. “If I could save a few lives. You understand. “I am thankful.”
The warden did not return a request for comment from the media.
Corrections officials did not immediately reply to demands for comment, and it is unclear whether any inmates have been charged, other than that the case is being investigated. Williams was the father of two small children.
The tragic incident occurred as the Department of Justice was suing Alabama for failing to prevent inmate violence and abuse by prison guards at its state penitentiaries.
A federal trial is scheduled for next year, according to the Alabama Appleseed Center for Justice and Law.
