City Council Member Resigns After Guilty Plea in Drug Conspiracy Case: Why Did He Accept the Plea?

After accepting a guilty plea to a federal conspiracy charge linked to the operation of a company that sold illegal drugs in both his home state of Mississippi and in North Carolina, a member of the city council in south Mississippi has decided to step down from his position.

According to the reports of local news agencies, Robert Leon Deming, III announced on Tuesday that he would be resigning from his position on the Biloxi City Council. This was his third stint in office.

The announcement that Deming had reached a plea agreement was made by federal prosecutors the previous week. He allegedly marketed CBD and vape goods that included banned substances for more than two million dollars, according to the allegations. Customer complaints were received by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) indicating that certain items caused customers to become unwell.

In the year 2020, representatives from the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and the Drug Enforcement Administration initiated an investigation into the Candy Shop, which was owned by Deming.

Deming agreed to give up more than $1.9 million and a yellow monster truck as part of the terms of his plea agreement. August will be the month that he is sentenced.

In 2020, Deming attempted to run for a position in the United States House of Representatives in south Mississippi, but he was unsuccessful in the Republican primary.
