Coeur D’Alene Incident! Man Arrested for Attempted KIDNAPPING and PROPERTY DAMAGE

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department apprehended a guy at the St. Vincent de Paul Help Center (SVDP) after he reportedly attempted to kidnap a girl on Tuesday night.

According to the department, Richard Swigart and his daughter were sitting in their car in the parking lot of the Help Center on May 21.

“He [Swigart] arrived with his daughter in the car. Larry Riley, Executive Director of SVDP Help Center, explained that his mother was enrolled in one of their parent teaching sessions.

The suspect, 33-year-old Peter Cahoon, approached the vehicle. He started asking Swigart and his daughter questions, which made Swigart nervous.

According to police, Cahoon is a transient from Oklahoma.

“I understand he may have been in the area a couple, [or] three days,” Riley stated. Cahoon then tried to pull the girl out of the open car window, while Swigart backed up.

According to police, Cahoon got on the car’s bonnet as Swigart attempted to drive away and continued to try to unlock the door until he slipped off and the car pulled away.

Swigart was able to drive forward and escape. He promptly dialed 911.

Officers in Coeur d’Alene discovered Cahoon several blocks away from the scene of the indecency.

“Cahoon seemed to be suffering from mental health issues and made statements about trying to save the girl,” according to the department.

Cahoon faces charges of attempted second-degree kidnapping, violence, malicious injury to property, disturbing the peace, and obstructing and resisting an officer. He was booked into the Kootenai County Jail and made his first court appearance on Wednesday.
