East Flatbush Community Mourns Loss of Beloved 88-Year-Old Grandmother
DEBARYLIFE – Following an apartment fire earlier this month, the 88-year-old grandmother’s family said farewell to their loved one on Saturday.
Gloria Mitchell, 88, died unexpectedly in an East Flatbush fire. Family and friends came together to say a heartbreaking farewell to her. Early on Tuesday morning, the fire spread throughout her house, making it difficult for her to flee.
Attendees at the memorial event recalled Gloria as a devoted mother who lived her life for her family and the community. “She was the soul and heart of our family,” Angela Mitchell, her granddaughter, recalled. “Her warmth and kindness touched everyone she met.”

Authorities dealing with fires are still looking into what started the fire. The community comes together to help the Mitchell family during this trying time as they grieve.

On May 4, Albertine Ettienne’s apartment building on New York Avenue caught fire while she was asleep. She had inhaled smoke and was brought to the hospital in severe condition; two days later, she passed away. Albertina Ettienne would turn 89 in just two weeks.
Her daughters claim that she had a long life ahead of her and was in good health.
Ettienne leaves behind seven children, thirty grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. One of the NYPD members is among them.
