Family Tragedy: 24-year-old Suspected of Severely Injuring 7-year-old Brother
A 24-year-old California man is charged with attempted murder after reportedly stabbing his 7-year-old sibling.
According to a news release issued by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday, May 14, Cristian Gutierrez is suspected of stabbing his younger brother on the night of Thursday, May 9, at their house on the 9500 block of Ben Hur Avenue in Whittier, California.
“It is further alleged that Gutierrez inflicted great bodily injury and used a knife during the commission of the crime,” the announcement states. According to KABC-TV, Guitierrez was allegedly “having withdrawals from his psych medication and stabbed his brother seven times” at the time of the event. PEOPLE has contacted the sheriff’s department for comment.

“It’s tragic. I mean, it’s his younger brother. I’m sure no one would do it unless they had an episode, right? So let’s provide him the assistance he requires,” neighbor Michael Yanatovic.
Gutierrez’s brother was brought to the hospital in severe condition following the attack, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office. “The People recommend that Gutierrez be held on a $1,075,000 bail. “If convicted as charged, Gutierrez faces a maximum sentence of life in state prison,” the news release states.
District Attorney George Gascón stated in a statement, “My heart goes out to this innocent child and his family during this extremely difficult time.”

According to court documents, Gutierrez appeared at the Downey Courthouse on Tuesday for his appearance and plea and was remanded in jail. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday, May 15.
