Houston Scam Alert: Man Impersonates Rabbi, Lawyer, and Officer, Allegedly Sw
Houston – According to police, court documents, and his family, the guy accused of using a deceased woman’s credit card to spend $15,000 has a long history of fraud.
According to police, Dustin Mitchell, also known as Dustin Cohen, disguised as a Rabbi, lawyer, and possibly an officer in order to scam individuals. They also believe he spray-painted anti-Semitic vandalism on his own truck. According to court records, he has been charged with fraud-related charges in Missouri since 2006. According to documents, he posed as a lawyer in Dallas in 2017 and 2018. He was convicted of the offenses and spent time in prison.
His new allegations consist of four felony counts connected to fraud.
“He’s also under investigation for creating multiple fictitious non-profit organizations,” said Houston Police Detective Brian Tsai. According to authorities, the woman from whom he allegedly took the credit card was a member of the church with which he was linked.
Mitchell was once the director of operations of Chabad of West Houston, but he is no longer there.
“As a prison chaplain/Rabbi, I believe that people may be rehabilitated and live successful lives…so I am deeply shocked and disturbed by the news of Mr. Mitchell’s allegations. This all took our congregation by surprise. In the coming weeks and months, we will fully cooperate with law enforcement. We pray that no additional damage has yet to be discovered,” Rabbi Goldstein said in a statement.
Dustin’s brother, Travis Mitchell, claims that he has known his brother to be a con artist for his whole adult life. He claims his brother made him a victim in 2011 when he was going through the most difficult time in his life.
“My wife and I lost our second child.” Dustin jumped up and said, ‘I’ll assist you guys out, and host a fundraiser.’ He performed all of that, and the funeral house never received the money,” he explained.
He estimates that the victims of his brother’s fraudulent operations number in the hundreds.
“He identifies those who are hurt, and he discovers a weakness. He feeds on it. “Like right now with the Jewish community down there,” he explained.
He expressed his delight that Dustin is being held without bond and that an investigation has led to his arrest.
Houston police said their investigation into Mitchell began when he called to report a hate crime. He informed authorities that someone had spray-painted “Fu** Israel” on his truck.
Dustin even posted about the report on his YouTube website in March.
Police say their investigation revealed Mitchell’s story did not add up.
“We suspect he spray painted it on himself. “We did find spray paint bottles the same color as the spray paint on his truck,” Detective Tsai stated.
This prompted authorities to investigate Mitchell further, learning about his record in Missouri and Dallas before uncovering additional evidence of fraud here.
“I’d like to see him put in jail for the rest of his life,” Travis replied.
Mitchell is being held at the Harris County Jail without bond.
