Massachusetts Man Convicted of First-degree Murder in Bucks County Domestic Tragedy
PHILADELPHIA — On Tuesday, a man from Massachusetts was found guilty of first-degree murder for the death of his girlfriend, which occurred over two years ago inside her home while she was living in Bucks County. In response to a “report of a suicidal subject,” Northampton police officers were dispatched to a residence located on the 12000 block of Clark Court on June 8, 2022.
Officers can be seen on bodycam footage declaring their presence and banging on the door, but no one answers the door. Shortly after that, the sound of gunshots was heard, and a young girl, no older than four years old, opened the door while covered in blood. She informed the cops that her mother, Samantha Rementer, who was 31 years old, had been murdered by her lover, Thadius McGrath, who was 37 years old, and that he had then shot himself.
When the police entered the house, they discovered a second smaller child seated on a chair that was adjusted to their height. They rescued both children from the house and brought them to a secure location afterward.
The deceased body of Rementer was found by the police on the floor of a bedroom. According to the reports, she suffered from blunt force wounds to her face as well as an electric cable that was wrapped around her neck.
It was determined that McGrath had shot himself in the face, causing him to suffer from gunshot wounds.
In a later account, Rementer’s daughter detailed the sequence of events that led up to her mother’s death. She stated that the two of them disagreed before McGrath’s execution by beating and strangulation.
In the days leading up to McGrath’s trial, he admitted to his parents over the phone that he had planned the murder with them. He stated that he had given some thought to what he was about to do, and then he informed Rementer that he was going to try to kill her.
“It very, very much is first-degree murder,” he told his father when they were on the phone to discuss the situation.
The charges against McGrath include murder in the first degree, endangering a child, recklessly endangering another person, and possessing a weapon from a criminal organization.
