Sad News: Bush Appointee Dies in Car Crash Outside Nevada Federal Courthouse, Police Confirm

George W. Bush appointed U.S. District Court Judge Larry Hicks in 2001; authorities have confirmed that Hicks died in a Nevada crash.

Sheriff Darin Balaam of Washoe County wrote on X, “Today’s news regarding the Honorable Judge Larry R. Hicks who served Nevada for over 53 years is tragic.”

Both the Washoe Sheriff’s Department and the Reno Police Department have confirmed that Hicks was struck and killed by an automobile on Wednesday afternoon around 2:15 p.m. outside the federal courthouse in downtown Reno, Nevada.

After being taken to a nearby hospital, the 80-year-old passed away, according to the police.

According to the authorities, the motorist in question remained at the site and is assisting with the inquiry.

Judge Hicks started his legal career in 1968 in Nevada as a prosecutor. From 1974 to 1978, he was the District Attorney.

Before President George W. Bush appointed Hicks as a U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Nevada in 1978, he became a partner in a private firm.

Judge Hicks once said, ‘My greatest delight in life is my family,’ notwithstanding his many successes. Balaam stated, “His life philosophy was centered on striking a balance between job, family, and self.

Judge Hicks’ devotion to his community and family will always be cherished.

“Larry Hicks was a one-of-a-kind man, revered in our community and, most importantly, beloved by his family,” Balaam stated.

“Chris, the current District Attorney, and the entire family of Larry are our sincere condolences, on behalf of my family and the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office. The memory of Judge Hicks will live on in Washoe County forever.”
