Alabama MAN CHARGED in Connection With 2021 HIT-AND-RUN DEATH of 79-year-old Woman in Queens

An Alabama man who previously lived in Queens has been charged with leaving the scene of a deadly hit-and-run that killed a 79-year-old lady in 2021, according to the local district attorney.

Edward Garzón, 43, was charged Thursday with fleeing the scene of a fatal crash near the Shops at Atlas Park in Glendale. If convicted, Garzón may face up to seven years in prison. He is expected to appear in court on July 22.

The charges relate to an alleged series of events on December 13, 2021. On that day, about 4:50 p.m., Garzón was driving a black 2015 Mercedes Benz S550 eastbound on Cooper Avenue between 82nd and 83rd streets when Helena Conti of Queens crossed the intersection.

Garzón allegedly struck Conti before fleeing the scene. According to the allegations, Conti was taken to the hospital and died as a result of serious head damage sustained during the incident.

Investigators allegedly discovered the Mercedes at a nearby auto body shop after filing an insurance claim for the damage.

The investigators then obtained DNA samples that matched Conti from the car’s windshield, headlights, and other spots.

“I created a Vehicular Homicide Unit and assembled experts to ensure that every family receives closure,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said of the unit, which investigates both current and older unsolved cases.
