Scam Alert! NJ Gas Station Worker Under Investigation For Alleged Theft of Thousands

DEBARYLIFE – Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago reports that a 48-year-old gas station employee has been charged with embezzling thousands of dollars from more than a dozen patrons at a well-known establishment on Route 9.

A Monmouth County Grand Jury has indicted Newark resident Patrick A. Brown on 52 charges of third- and fourth-degree offenses, including 13 counts each of credit card fraud, false utterance, theft, and credit card theft.

Under the direction of Sgt. Sean Foley, the Freehold Township Police discovered a pattern of thefts at the Wawa gas station along the northbound roadway last summer during a “limited amount of time in August 2023.”

Before paying for the actual gas order, Brown is accused of taking a customer’s credit or debit card and swiping it through an “attached device on his phone.”

According to authorities, he consistently sent hundreds of thousands of dollars at a time into a bank account under Brown’s control.

The week after the first theft was reported, Brown, who is no longer employed at the gas station, was charged criminally. As more victims came to light, he was charged with further counts.
