“Shocking Confession!” Missouri’s Man Confessed to Murdering His Hospitalized Wife by Strangling Her Because He Couldn’t Pay Her Hospital Bills

A Missouri man is charged with second-degree murder after strangling his wife to death while she was lying in a hospital bed over the weekend, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker revealed.

According to court papers, Ronnie Wiggs confessed to authorities that he killed his wife, who had come to the hospital for a new dialysis port.

On Friday, May 3, just before 11:30 p.m., a uniformed cop working off duty at a hospital in Independence, Missouri, went to the ICU unit in response to an attack. A “Code Blue” was issued for a victim, according to a probable cause statement.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a code blue hospital announcement normally indicates that an adult is experiencing a medical emergency, such as cardiac or respiratory arrest. Medical workers allegedly overheard Wiggs say, “I did it, I killed her, I choked her.”

Another witness noticed suspicious injuries on the victim. The injuries detected were redness on the victim’s left and right sides of the neck. There was also a recent wound in the victim’s throat. The witness stated that the injuries witnessed could not have been caused by resuscitation efforts.

According to the statement, hospital workers were able to re-establish her pulse, but they judged she was brain-dead and began planning the organ harvest.

According to prosecutors, Wiggs confessed to choking her and covering her nose and mouth to keep her from yelling. Wiggs then allegedly told police that he killed his wife because he was sad and unable to care for her or pay her medical bills.

Wiggs also allegedly told officers that he attempted to kill his wife twice more while she was hospitalized. He claimed he last tried to kill his wife while she was at a rehabilitation facility for medical concerns. He stated that he attempted to choke her but was unable to do so. According to court filings, Wiggs claimed that when his wife awoke, she told him not to do it again.

Wiggs also allegedly informed police that he planned to kill his wife again, but he did not have the opportunity since the victim was linked up to various monitors at the hospital.

Wiggs appeared in court for the first time Monday on a second-degree murder charge and was sent to the public defender’s office. A hearing was also scheduled for Thursday to review his $250,000 bond.
