Alabama seniors can now get Fresh Produce Benefit Cards for 2024

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is excited to announce the commencement of applications for the 2024 Fresh Produce Benefit Cards.

This initiative is a crucial component of the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), designed to enhance the nutritional intake of Alabama’s senior citizens by providing them access to fresh, locally-sourced fruits and vegetables.

Eligible seniors receive a $50 card to be used at certified farmers markets and stands across Alabama, fostering not only improved health and nutrition but also supporting local agriculture and community-based businesses.

Eligibility and Application Process:

To qualify for this program, individuals must be at least 60 years old as of their application date. The program also stipulates income requirements, setting a maximum gross monthly income of $2,248 for individuals living alone and $3,041 for a household of two.

Families with more than two members should visit the Alabama Department of Agriculture’s website for further information regarding eligibility criteria.

Applications must be filled out and submitted online through the Alabama Department of Agriculture’s official website, found at agi.alabama.gov/farmersmarket. It’s important to note that the process does not accommodate telephone or mail submissions.

Seniors who benefited from this program in 2023 must reapply to continue receiving support in 2024, ensuring they retain their previous year’s card number for the application.

Utilization and Benefits Redemption:

The Fresh Produce Benefit Cards are valid for use from May 1 to November 27, 2024. Eligible participants can redeem their benefits at a range of approved locations, including farmers markets, farm stands, and U-Pick operations throughout Alabama.

For a comprehensive list of participating locations and eligible produce, beneficiaries should visit the following page: agi.alabama.gov/farmersmarket/locations. Please be aware that the cards cannot be used in grocery stores or at any venues not listed on the state’s approved list.
