When family members called the police on Friday to ask for assistance, Katia Chong claimed that her son was experiencing a mental health crisis. His fiancée, Madeleine Cabrera, claimed that just before he was shot and killed by police on Saturday at the Villas of Sunrise development, he was on the verge of receiving the necessary assistance.

It was his court date on the 22nd. According to Cabrera, a judge ordered him to check into a mental health facility.

According to Homestead Police Department spokesman Capt. Fernando Morales, the standoff on Friday came to an end amicably. Leandro Chong may be seen talking to himself while standing at the front door in a witness video. He carried a fanny pack.

According to Morales, before the police-involved shooting, Leandro Chong threw objects at them and had his hands inside a fanny pack. On Saturday morning, police responded to a complaint of gunfire at the same residence.

Leandro Chong was hailed by Luisa Delvals and Karen Jam as “an amazing stepfather and an amazing husband” on a GoFundMe page. They say he carried only a screwdriver, a rehab pamphlet, and his keys in his fanny pack.

The officers involved in the police-involved shooting were placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted an investigation.
